June 4th, 2021 was my last day working a comfy 9 to 5 office job. It has now been a full year since I became a full-time
self employed lifestyle and wedding photographer and the journey since that day has been a rollercoaster.
You know that saying, “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” ?
Yah, that’s garbage advice. Do what you love and you will not only work 24/7 but you’ll also dream about work. You’ll be thinking about work every waking minute. You’ll be planning future projects as you are working. You will take every single thing so seriously and so personally, your heart will actually break when you face rejection because ultimately that means one thing: less income, right? Self employed life, baby!
Speaking of life, you will miss out on your own personal and social life
You will constantly doubt every decision you take, every job you accept, every partnership, every social media post –omg, social media. This is a whole topic for a different day. –Everything comes with its own special hell.
BUT (and it’s a big but)
Instead of believing this is all impossible and maybe even too much for me, I’m leaning into the fact that this is just part of the process. Expansion. Growth. All of it is just uncomfortable change. Whether you’re growing life, growing muscles, or growing a business -it’s uncomfortable and it’s not meant to be easy. Living the life of your dreams or having the career of your dreams… it doesn’t mean it’s not difficult or painful in any way. It’s all of it! Amazing and awful, energetic and exhausting, beautiful and ugly, the highest highs and the lowest lows, so hard and yet the easiest thing ever. But it’s always the life, the career of my dreams. No question.
If you’re reading this and you feel hopelessly stuck in a job you don’t necessarily love but it pays the bills and you feel like you’ll never be able to take that leap, know that you are not alone. For 11 years, I was exactly where you are now. I would daydream about the day when I had my own photography business. I would daydream about supporting my child by doing what I truly love rather than helping someone else build their dream business. I would daydream about being hired to capture epic once-in-a-lifetime moments in epic locations.
Use this as a stepping stone to get to the next level because nothing is forever, my friend. Keep working towards where you want to be, I promise you that every effort matters. Every thing you do, every dollar and ounce of energy you invest into getting “there”, MATTERS.
Annnnnd now that I’m done with that personal rant, I want to share a few of my favorite images from creative sessions over the past 12 months. I figured this was the perfect space for them.
psssst! if you are thinking of booking me for your next session (family, maternity, branding(!) or just something creative, I’d
love to connect with you sooner than later. My books are open for the Summer and getting limited for the Fall.
