First thing you need to know about Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is that there is a photography permit fee. There are a couple of permit options you can choose from: weekday, weekend, early access (“sunrise”), and indoor + outdoor access. These permits range from $250+ tax to $750 + tax, and I guarantee, that permit fee is 100 percent worth it.

Let’s be honest, if the vibe that you are going for for your engagement photos at Vizcaya is anything along the lines of editorial, timeless, elegant then your session wouldn’t be complete without exploring the beauty of the indoor courtyard/main house. Because you can only take photos here before the museum opens to the public, the morning light here is perfect. Plus, you cannot beat starting your session off air conditioned rooms!
It’s important to note that you can only spend one hour here –my best tip would be to plan for an outfit at this spot and then change into a second outfit for the gardens.

What to Consider for Your Own Engagement Session at Vizcaya
In addition to securing that photography permit ahead of time, especially if you are considering early access hours, here are a few other things to keep in mind for a stress-free visit:
Outfit Choices: This stunning European-style location calls for chic and classy outfits in neutral tones or soft pastels. For the ladies, flowy dresses (or at least not overly tight) beautifully complement the lush gardens and architecture.
For the men, a suit or classic outfit. Plan on bringing a pair of back up comfortable shoes that you can switch into, there is plenty of walking at Vizcaya and if you are wearing formal shoes, that may hinder you a bit.
Exploring the Grounds: Vizcaya Museum & Gardens grounds are so vast and there is so much of it to see, from the gardens to the indoor house, to the waterfront views. Therefore, plan on spending at least an hour and a half here if you want to take your time to enjoy the incredible scenery and explore where the light hits best for your session time.
Bring a handheld fan if you must. One thing I’ve noticed with all my sessions is that clients will bring one too many bags or props or outfit changes and this is all stuff that has to be carried around. There are no lockers or areas to leave personal items behind.
