Portrait Session at Vizcaya
As a wedding photographer in Miami, I’ve had the honor of photographing many portrait sessions at Vizcaya Gardens, and it never gets old. This location is such a dream and it has everything, from lush gardens to European inspired architecture –Vizcaya is a stunning location.
Why Vizcaya? If you are in the Miami area and want a unique location away from the beaches for your photo session, then Vizcaya is perfect. We are talking about 10 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, a majestic villa, and waterfront views. Vizcaya truly has it all and it lends itself to a romantic, elegant vibe making your photo gallery look super diverse and like you were in a private villa in the middle of Italy.
Important Things to Know About Vizcaya
Some logistics you need to know before booking a photo session at Vizcaya:
- Permit fee. This location requires a permit for professional portrait sessions. The fee ranges from $250-$750, depending on when you want to know and how much you want access to.
More information about this here. - Timing. This is not the place for mini sessions. If you are planning on a portrait session at Vizcaya, plan on being here at least for one hour. There is lots of walking to do and endless picture-perfect spots. Not to mention, if you are going during the weekend or during peak travel season (Spring break, Summer break, holiday months), it may be crowded which means you will have to wait a bit for the good areas.
- Timing, again. In my experience photographing at this location, the best time for photos is 1.5 hours prior to closing time.
If morning is the only option for you, of course, the early access permit is 100% worth the fee but as a second option, go right at opening time –9 AM. See a morning gallery here!
What to Wear and What to Bring.
As with any other location, your styling choices can make or break the mood/vibe of your portrait session, so what that in mind, here’s what I have to say:
Vizcaya is elegant and timeless, please keep that in mind when going over your outfit options.
Flowy dresses, suits, or elevated casual outfits always photograph beautifully here.
Comfort goes a long way! Yes, style is important but we also need you to be comfortable. Remember how I said there’s tons of walking to do here? Bring a pair of comfy shoes to switch into when we are not shooting. I promise you, this is a must. In the hot months, I always recommend a second outfit as you will likely be sweating quite a lot.
Bring some essentials.
Besides the comfy shoes and back up outfit, bring water, a small handheld fan, and whatever you need to touch up your hair or makeup. And that’s about it!
