Today, instead of talking about this spicy maternity session, I wanted to share a few tips on how to find
a maternity photographer who will beautifully document the magic of this fleeting experience.
1. START EARLY.
Start looking for a maternity photographer well in advanced. I see you, first time parents! You think you have time but
trust me, I’ve been there and time flies. You want to start looking at around the beginning of the second trimester so you can
plan your outfits, your vision, the timing –when should you book for? My best recommendation is to book your
session between 26 and 32 weeks. Anything after that and you’ll likely be back to feeling sick, tired, or anything less than
stellar.
2. DEFINE YOUR VISION AND RESEARCH
Look for inspiration images and determine what kind of style you identify with best. Do you want candid, natural flowing
“poses”, do you want an intimate session like the one you see here, do you want something more editorial and elegant?
Understand what you identify with, what you want these photos to represent, and look for a photographer that aligns with
what you like. Make sure to ask for recommendations from those you know who have had maternity photos done… and check online reviews!
In addition to checking those reviews, though, I have to add this: check portfolios and verify that the photographer you are choosing
has experience. Maternity photography requires a unique understanding of pregnant bodies and what you’re going through on this journey,
so working with someone who is familiar with this field on top of what you’re going through is essential.
3. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
Ultimately, mamas, trust your instincts when choosing a maternity photographer to create with. Get inspired, do your research,
get on a call or Zoom call with your possible photographer(s) but also go with the one whose work, style, AND professionalism
makes you feel confident and comfortable.
Choosing the right maternity photographer is crucial in beautifully capturing the joy, love, excitement, and truly anything you’re feeling
during this special journey.
